Final Fantasy VII Remake is receiving an official board game adaptation, which has yet to be announced but is being developed by Square Enix.

The city of Midgar will soon become a battleground for dice and pieces, as an official Final Fantasy VII Remake board game is on the way from Square Enix. It's become more and more common for video games often receive a tabletop version, with everything from farming sims like Stardew Valley to roguelikes like The Binding of Isaac getting board and card games.

The Final Fantasy series has been the subject of lots of different kinds of merchandise, especially FF7 Remake, which has received everything from jewelry to perfume. There haven't been that many Final Fantasy board games over the years, with a notable few based on the Chocobo franchise. This is despite the fact that there are many premium board games based on video games on the market, including Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Resident Evil, and Horizon Zero Dawn. These board games are typically funded through Kickstarter and come with high-quality pieces, such as Elden Ring's upcoming board game.

Square Enix is jumping into the world of board games with both feet, by adapting one of its biggest games of all time. A sign at the Essen Spiel 2022 convention (as spotted by Matt Jarvis of Dicebreaker) is advertising an official FF7 Remake board game that has Square Enix's logo and no mention of any other developer. There's no word regarding a release date, outside of the game "Coming Soon," which presumable means 2023 at the earliest. There was also an advertisement for a Chocobo's Dungeon board game that's coming in 2023.

The world of FF7 Remake and the other Final Fantasy games are depicted in at least one tabletop game, as there is an official Final Fantasy TCG available. There are also Final Fantasy cards coming to MTG in 2024. A full board game based on FF7 Remake is a new venture and it's unclear whether it will be dice-based or card-based, whether it will be PvP or co-op, or whether it's just another Mafia/Werewolf clone, with a Shinra agent trying to infiltrate Avalanche. There are lots of possibilities and it's just too early to say what direction the FF7 Remake board game will go in, especially as it's currently just a logo spotted at a convention and hasn't been offically announced yet.

The FF7 Remake board game should at least be set entirely in Midgar and it's easy to see the city being the basis for the board. There's also a good chance that FF7 Remake's party members (Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and maybe Yuffie from the INTERmission DLC) will be playable characters in the board game. If the game comes with some high-quality minis, then that might make the official Final Fantasy VII Remake board game worth the price of admission alone.
