Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos, the most recent Dungeons & Dragons module, adds plenty of new spells and magic items. When it comes to spells Strixhaven introduces five new, very powerful spells. As well as a total of eight new magic items that make Strixhaven University feel like a real university.

Players and GMs who want to get a lot of mileage out of the module may want to consider using some of the new spells and magic items.

Borrowed Knowledge allows players to call on spirits of the past to increase a character's knowledge. When using this spell players can choose one skill they lack a proficiency bonus in and for the next hour the players have proficiency in the chosen skill.

This second-level spell is a powerful asset for players to have. Proficiencies in skills can make or break a character in various types of encounters. They can often be what decides if a player lives or dies in more serious encounters. Having the ability to grant temporary proficiencies can be used in a variety of ways.

Half-casters such as Paladins, Fighters, Rangers, and Monks will want to consider adding Kinetic Jaunt to their spell lists. Kinetic Jaunt is a second-level transmutation spell that allows players to enhance their movement.

Using dance-like steps players are able to increase their walking speed by 10 feet. While this spell is active, players can move away from attacking enemies without provoking an opportunity to attack. In addition, now players are also able to move through the space of another creature, without suffering from difficult terrain limits.

Silvery Barbs is a first-level enchantment spell that can be cast as a reaction. The caster can cause a magical distraction, forcing the creature to reroll the d20 and take the lower roll. This is a great way players can avoid having the GM hit them with a natural 20 attack.

Players with Silvery Barbs can also choose a different creature, including themselves, to use this distraction on. By choosing a target players can grant their allies an advantage on their next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.

Vortex Warp is a second-level conjuration spell that allows players to twist space around a target. If the target fails a Constitution saving throw they are teleported to the space of the player's choice.

However, the space must be unoccupied for the teleportation to work. The teleportation will also only work if the target is supported by the space. If the target has to squeeze to fit into the space, the spell will not work.

Players studying at Witherbloom College may eventually explore using the Wither and Bloom spell. This spell is a second-level necromancy spell that allows players to invoke life and death.

The caster can set a ten-foot radius sphere, within sixty feet of themselves. Each creature within the sphere must make a Constitution saving throw, or suffer 2d6 necrotic damage. The damage is halved on a successful saving throw.

Any non-magical vegetation within the sphere also withers away. While necrotic damage can be devastating, players can choose one creature within the sphere to heal.

The target can roll one of their unspent hit dice and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll, plus the casters spellcasting ability modifier. The healing benefits of this spell can change the outcome of an encounter in the party's favor.

Players can now take their coffee obsessions into their next Dungeons & Dragons game. The Bottle of Boundless Coffee is a new common item introduced in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos. The metal bottle carries warm coffee, which is always warm and none of the heat can be felt through the bottle.

When drinking from this magical thermos, however, players must roll a d20. If players roll a 1 the bottle will outright refuse to dispense any coffee. Players can not get around this by pouring the coffee into a separate cup, as any poured out will vanish the moment it leaves the bottle.

A fun way players can decorate their University dorm rooms, is by purchasing a Cuddly Strixhaven Mascot plush toy. The toy can represent any of the colleges' mascots.

Players can use an action to press the toy into their arm, shoulder, or leg where the toy will stay attached for up to an hour. Bringing a plush toy to a combat encounter may seem strange, however, these cuddly mascots provide players with an advantage against the Frightened status effect.

Strixhaven students can also purchase their respective college's Primer. These magical textbooks are created by their respective College. Each primer has 3 charges and regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.

Players are granted an additional 1d4 bonus on a skill check if they are holding the primer, on top of their d20 roll. Players can also study the primer at the end of a long rest. This allows them to choose one first-level spell to cast without a spell slot, while they are holding the primer.

Each colleges’ primer benefits specific skills, as well as pulls spells, from specific spell lists.

Students can obtain a pennant that carries the symbol of Strixhaven or one of its colleges. If the character waves the pennant in the air, it sheds bright light in a ten-foot radius. It releases another ten-foot radius of dim light beyond that. This can be very handy if the party decided to forgo taking cantrips and spells that produce light sources.
